Travel insurance is one of the most commonly forgotten items when planning a trip, but it can be the difference between a quickly resolved emergency and a much bigger headache - and expense.

When it's mandatory

For trips to Europe within the Schengen Area (most of the European Union), travel insurance is required by law, with a minimum medical coverage set by contract - without it, entry into the country can be denied. Other destinations, such as Cuba, also require proof of insurance on arrival.

What about when it's not mandatory?

Even without a legal requirement, medical care abroad can cost far more than in Brazil. In the United States, for example, a simple emergency visit can run into thousands of dollars without insurance.

What travel insurance usually covers

• Flight cancellation or delay, depending on the plan

How to choose the right plan

The recommended minimum medical coverage varies by destination - Europe, for example, requires at least 30,000 euros in coverage. It's worth checking whether the plan also covers adventure sports, if that applies to you, and whether it offers 24-hour assistance in your language.
