Jericoacoara Travel Guide: How to Get There and What Foreign Visitors Need to Know

Giant sand dunes, freshwater lagoons, and a sunset famous around the world: Jericoacoara ("Jeri") is one of Brazil's most sought-after destinations, and also one of the trickiest to plan, since the village itself has no paved road for the final stretch. The good news is that getting there has become much simpler in recent years.
Option 1: fly directly into Jericoacoara Airport (JJD)
The village has its own airport, Comte. Ariston Pessoa Regional Airport (code JJD), about 31 km from downtown Jericoacoara. Airlines including GOL, LATAM, and, seasonally, Azul operate direct flights from São Paulo–Guarulhos and other major Brazilian cities. From the airport, the final leg into the village is done by van or 4x4 vehicle, which is shorter and more predictable than the classic route through Fortaleza.
Option 2: fly into Fortaleza, then travel overland
This is the traditional route and offers more flight options (LATAM, GOL, and Azul all operate multiple daily flights between São Paulo and Fortaleza). From Fortaleza, it's roughly 320 km and about 6 hours to Jericoacoara, usually by van, bus, or 4x4. The final stretch runs over sand dunes in adapted off-road vehicles known locally as "jardineiras". There's no paved road all the way to the village.
Which option to choose
A direct flight to JJD is usually faster overall, but flight frequency is lower, especially outside peak season. The Fortaleza route offers far more flight times and fares, in exchange for a longer overland leg. If your trip is short on time, it's worth prioritizing a direct JJD flight whenever one is available on your dates.
Best time to visit
Jericoacoara is warm year-round, but the mid-year months (roughly June through September) bring the strongest winds, ideal for kitesurfing. Peak season (December to February and July) means higher prices and more crowds, so book ahead if you're traveling then. The area is a protected national park managed by ICMBio, Brazil's official environmental agency.
